The history of Earth Day holds that the first event happened on April 22, 1970, with 20 Million participants around the world. That number since since grown to over 500 Million, with the participation of numerous national governments and 175 countries. And perhaps what made even more impact than those famous demonstrations, along with the "teach-ins" and cleaning up of so many places across the country by the approximately 20 million people participating that first historic event, was the bipartisan political action which followed.</div>

Many student leaders identified what they called the "Dirty Dozen," members of the Congress and Senate whose environmental records were atrocious, and whose seats were vulnerable. These student leaders actively campaigned against the targeted legislators, not only holding letter-writing crusades, but also walking the precincts where the voters were who held the sway. By election day of 1972, seven of that ''dirty dozen'' had been kicked out of office; those replaced were five Republicans, and two senior Democrats. To quote Mr. McClosky, "That just had an enormous effect. The environment had proved it could deliver votes."</div>

When Senator Gaylord Nelson was first elected to office in 1962, he was already deeply concerned by the fact that the environment was not on any political agenda, although normal citizens were increasingly aware of the disturbing effects that matters such as pollution were having on the environment and human health.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This environmental issue stayed on the back burner for seven years, making the history of Earth Day that much more compelling, until Senator Nelson invited people from all walks of life in 1969 to join him the following year to a grassroots demonstration raising awareness about environmental issues. April 22, 1970 marked the first day in the history of Earth Day.</div>

The response was intensely overwhelming. Rallies were held across the nation, and by the time the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a poll in 1971, a full 25% indicated that protecting the environment was an important goal to them.</div>

March 21, 1970 was furthermore declared by San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto as International Earth Day, celebrated on the March equinox, which tends to fall around March 20. The listed founder is John McConnell.</div>

Earth Day 1970 launched the environmental movement across the country and beyond, by harnessing the energy and enthusiasm of college students. In 2003, former Congressman Pete McCloskey, co-sponsor of that first Earth Day, sees the need to do it all over again. Mr. McCloskey credits Mr. Hayes and Sen. Nelson with making Earth Day happen. He was recruited as a rare, like-minded Republican to co-sponsor the event in the House of Representatives.</div>

The Earth Day Network is now is the coordinating group for the movement, and under its Canopy Project, saw 1 Million trees planted in 2010, with over 50 Million for 2011. The Billion Acts of Green campaign is still continuing.</div>

Did you know: A typical family consumes 182 gallons of soda, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk, and 26 gallons of bottled water a year. That's a lot of containers that can all be recycled!!!</div>

From EPA.GOV: When you use a cleaning product, it is released into the environment-inside your home and down the drain to the outdoors. Adults come in contact with cleaning products on a regular basis, as do children who are often the most exposed when they crawl on the floor. Some consumers may prefer cleaning products that, for example, are inherently safer or do not irritate sensitive skin. Others may prefer products that break down quickly and do not harm fish or are safer for use around family pets. The DFE logo is an easy way to know you are choosing a product that is as safe as possible for people and the environment.</div>

<b>5.) Swap your transportation!</b></div>

While this is probably the MOST unoriginal one, planting a tree is probably the best. Every tree planted helps reduce greenhouse emissions, cleans air pollution, secures the soil around it to prevent erosion, and provides a home for a lot of biodiversity.</div>

<b>7.) Cook a meal dedicated to Earth Day!</b></div>

Try to gather a few of your neighbors, or try to get the entire neighborhood, to walk around and pick up any trash on the ground. Anything around sewers and drainage basins should be picked up because it leads to water systems and oceans. Litter is unsafe for wildlife and the ecosystem as well, so you'll be helping out tremendously.</div>

<b>9.) Read about the current issues on the planet</b></div>

Take the new things you've learned and share it with someone; your kids, significant other, neighbor... ANYONE! Information spreads like wildfire. The more people you share with the better.</div>

<b>10.) Take all of the things you've just read and continue to use them.</b></div>

Earth Day is a day for awareness, but that awareness doesn't have to become forgotten about on Monday morning. Everything above you can use, in some way, daily. You can share it, reblog it, post it to Facebook and Twitter, and make it apart of your everyday lifestyle.</div>

Since then, regular folk like you and me, stars and politicians have thrown themselves into expressing the issues of environmentally aware actions including recycling, energy efficiency and reducing and / or reusing disposable items. Progressing into an international effort to save our world, Earth Day turned into a global corporation with a ruling body to assemble activities and ideas.</div>

While many people support Earth Day, there are feedback. Some individuals say that Earth Day has come to designate the marginalization of environmental protection, and the celebration of itself has outlasted its usefulness, writer Alex Steffen. In a May 5th Washington Times editorial Arbor Day was compared with Earth Day as Arbor Day being a happy, non-political party of trees, while Earth Day was a pessimistic, political ideology that portrayed humans in a negative light. Peter Foster from Junk Science announces that Earth Day was conceived in counter-culture hysteria and has developed as a focus for ideological opposition to industrialized society and cites the volcanic eruption in Iceland as evidence Mother Nature does what she pleases and that includes polluting.</div>

When you look at it, Earth Day has some vehement adherents and vehement detractors. Either way they both have a point. We are stewards of this planet and we can make some sort of big messes, on the other hand the planet can make some big messes of its own that we don't have any power to control. Feeling guilty about how you live your life is not any way to live; that includes how you cope with the environment. We shouldn't feel guilty or be coerced into trying new concepts to keep our planet clean. We should wish to do what little we will to try to leave a better place for generations to come factoring in what we haven't any control of. Deciding the merits of Earth Day is a private call.</div>

At the very least bringing to the forefront perception of the toxic chemicals used in lots of our everyday products is a nice thing. This has created a huge commercial vacuum that firms are dashing to fill. Taking the green approach to packaging and making their products, corporations have jumped on the bandwagon of environmentally friendly products. Keeping toxic ingredients out of our cleaning and everyday products will go a long way to help the environment and our family's health.</div>

One way to help the planet is by purchasing earth friendly cleaning products. One company has been around making and promoting non-harmful and biodegradable cleaners and health products since before Earth Day and environmental problems were founded. Play a game with these questions. There are many answers to these questions, let your children use words, pictures, charades and body sculptures to express their ideas.<br />
What is kindness? What are some ways that you show kindness to others and to yourself? How can you show an animal, a plant or the earth kindness? How does reduce, recycle and reuse show kindness to the earth?<br />

<b>Kindness Challenge:</b><br />
Have a contest, with your children, to see how many acts of anonymous kindness they can do in a day. Ask them to think of several things he/she could do that would bring a smile to someones face. Include the earth in the acts of kindness. What would bring a smile to her face? Start them off with a few of your own ideas. Let your children keep track of their own progress. Keep a chalkboard or a piece of paper eye level to mark each act. Tally the total in the evening and celebrate the kindness that you have brought to the earth and the people on it.<br />

Visit a Recycling Center and discuss how recycling helps the earth.<br />
Visit the Animal Shelter in your area. Find out what it takes to adopt an animal and take care of it. Ask them about their rescue program.<br />

I'm sure you'd like to recreate some of those fond memories for your family and especially your kids. So here are a few tips to help you make that happen.</div>

For many families, Easter is about their faith, but that won't stop anyone from enjoying Easter egg hunts and Easter candy as a secular celebration. Easter is a day of joy, and the colorful eggs and accessories of traditional Easter serve to enhance that sense of joy in the essence of Spring and rebirth.</div>

For kids, or course, some of the appeal of Easter lies in the fact that it is yet another holiday where they expect to get lots of chocolates, candies, and other treats. And for the purposes of this report, we'll focus on the fun aspects of Easter, along with its joyousness. You can have a happy Easter, celebrating Springtime and its beauty and freedom, without focusing entirely on sugary stuff.</div>

<b>Easter is a Family Affair</b></div>

Families vary in how they like to celebrate Easter. So you get to pick just how you'd like to celebrate. But in spite of the individual differences, there are a lot of themes in common as well. Here are some of the standard ingredients:</div>

<b>a) Treats</b></div>

And about those eggs... there are so many different kinds, from chocolate eggs with and without filling, candy eggs, marshmallow eggs, and yes, even hard-boiled eggs that have been decorated brightly to add to the cheer.</div>

Peeps, preferably in various shapes and colors, are a must as well, as are jelly beans, which really look like miniature eggs.</div>

Some families even have their own special baked goods for Easter, which can range from special breads to cookies to fancy cakes with colorful Easter decorations. My mother used to bake each of us a cake in the shape of either Easter bunnies and Easter lambs! Some years, she let us pick which one we wanted.</div>

<b>b) Parades</b></div>

If there's an Easter parade in town or even nearby, be sure to take the kids, and snap plenty of pictures. If you go, you should be sure to get (or create) some special Easter bonnets for everyone, as there are often competitions for the best Easter bonnet at these events.</div>

For example, Richmond, Virginia, has a special Easter parade, fittingly called "Easter on Parade," that turns Monument Avenue, a gorgeous tree-lined Avenue with beautiful old homes and monuments into a temporary playground for Richmond's citizens, who wander up and down, showing off their bonnets -- and their decorated dogs. There are contests for best bonnets, both for humans and for their canine friends.</div>

Meanwhile, there's music playing all along the Avenue, and lots of fancy crafts as well as yummy goodies are for sale. There are also games for kids. Parades like this one can make for very special memories.</div>

Children always love Egg Hunts, which many towns, villages or institutions will organize on Easter weekend, so if you have a chance to take the kids to an Egg Hunt near where you live, they'll have a blast. If not, you can always hide eggs and candies tucked into colorful plastic eggs around the house or outside in the garden, weather-permitting.</div>

<b>Getting ready for Easter: Painting Easter Eggs</b></div>

One of the most cherished Easter traditions, other than actually getting and eating the candy, involves painting Easter eggs.</div>

You have two options: You could paint hard-boiled eggs and then eat them later, or you could remove the eggs' contents and paint the shells to use for decorations.</div>

In fact, you may want to do both. You can always make a brunch frittata from the contents of the hollowed-out eggs, and then use them to create pretty center pieces once you've painted them.</div>

In order to create those centerpieces, you could simply get Easter baskets and arrange the eggs prettily in the "grass." Of course there are plenty of additional possibilities, from creating a mobile and hanging it from the ceiling, to decorating a wreath with eggs and displaying it on the front door or in the hallway.</div>

The painted hard-boiled eggs, on the other hand, will be part of the Easter baskets meant for consumption, and they can also be hidden for the Easter egg hunt. Just make sure the kids find them all, or else you'll have some mighty foul odors coming from their hiding places a few weeks down the road.</div>

So how can you color your eggs? Once you have your "canvas" prepared, the process is easy.</div>

First, you need to decide whether you want to give your eggs a solid color base. If so, you can color them in a bath of food color.</div>

Next, you get some special Easter egg decorating tools, and paint away. It's entirely up to you whether you want to create a designer work of art, geometric shapes, or little bunny images. You can also incorporate stickers and special Easter egg "tattoos." If you are coloring eggs with your kids, encourage their creativity, and above all, have fun!</div>

Now, the selection has grown in every direction.</div>

Where there were only yellow chick peeps, peeps now come in a range of colors, including pink, blue, and purple. There are also bunnies in various electric colors. And yes, you can even buy sugar-free peeps for those of us who must avoid eating sugar.</div>

Next, you can select from a huge range of other candy in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from egg-shaped candies with creamy fillings in strawberry, raspberry, and coconut flavor, just for starters.</div>

And then, you can get Easter bunnies and related critters in all sizes, from pocket size all the way to bunnies big enough to dwarf your toddler.</div>

It's Not ALL About Food! What Else Can You Put In An Easter Basket?</div>

Just about anything you like, really, as long as the kids will enjoy it.</div>

From CDs to games to books, to cute little notebooks, pens, and erasers, you could really include anything that would make a good stocking stuffer. It's just that for Easter, it will go inside a basket.</div>

You could even include small clothing items or accessories, from socks to hair decorations, jewelry, and more.</div>

And don't forget gifts for the parents and friends. Here, you definitely don't have to restrict yourself to bunnies and candy, though feel free to include them, along with a choice piece of jewelry, a new watch, or a neat new electronic gadget and even new earphones in Easter-egg colors.</div>

And of course, no one has decreed that all the bunnies have to be edible. Some kids will enjoy bunnies that will be their pals for months and even years to come. Be sure to check with the parents -- they may not appreciate the extra work. If you'd enjoy baby bunnies, remember they grow up and become big rabbits, and even more bunnies, if you don't watch out!</div>

<b>Preparing an Easter Feast</b></div>

When it comes to desserts though, feel free to get creative and include some new elements or decorations. Unless you have a favorite dessert that's an absolute must-have.</div>

<b>What To Do About All Those Hard-Boiled Eggs After Easter?</b></div>

It's actually kind of funny that there are basically three kinds of eggs that make up the Easter repertoire: chocolate eggs, candy eggs, and hard-boiled eggs.</div>
